At first, Shannon did not intend to use such a highly charged term for his information measure. He thought “uncertainty” would be a safe word. But he changed his mind after a discussion with John von Neumann, the mathematician whose name is stamped upon some of the most important theoretical work of the first half of the twentieth century.

Von Neumann told Shannon to call his measure entropy, since “no one really knows what entropy is, so in a debate you will always have the advantage.”

The Name

After careful consideration we decided to name out boat "Entropy", it simply resonates with us, our lives and our boat!

In thermodynamics it describes the fact that the increase of disorder is an irreversible process within a system.

In information technology it denotes the amount of information within a message. Cryptography uses the term a lot in the context of creation of good random numbers.

The entropy pool in a Unix system collects random data to produce such random numbers.

And finally, there was the Cloak of Entropy which was a present of a certain female human rogue to a certain gnome warlock, back in the good old times of BC...

The Logo

We had the name, now how about some... merchandising!

With all the effort we have been taking to make the boat secure and comfortable for our long cruise we decided to make it shine.

In a different context we had good experiences with the designer platform 99designs.com. Hence we started a design contest for our boat logo which produced some really nice ideas.

Finally, we found the winner design:
